Single working hydraulic cylinders may also be of the displacement kind in which the oil tension will work straight on the end of the rod making no use of valves. In this particular cylinder pattern the force is handled by the surface area of the rod, while in a cylinder with a valve, the rod may be of any dimension and the pressure can be measured or handled by the valve design.

Usually one side of the tube is set and the end of the rod is connected to the item to be moved, irrespective of the simple fact that it will be easy to fix the end of the rod, and connect the thing being moved to the end of the tube. The dimension of hydraulic cylinders can be nearly unlimited, generally from a few centimeters long to various meters, despite the fact that in basic principle there are actually few limits.
